Libyan Airlines to resume scheduled Benghazi ops

Posted 18 July 2017 · Add Comment

Libyan Airlines said it plans to resume scheduled passenger services out of the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, reports ch-aviation.

From July 15, the airline is offering scheduled flights to Tripoli Mitiga and Kufrah domestically as well as Amman Queen Alia, Alexandria Borg el Arab, Istanbul Atatürk, and Tunis internationally. It is still unknown if the carrier will base aircraft out Benghazi, once one of its primary hubs.

Also, the GNA's Ministry of Transportation has signed a contract with Italian consortium AENEAS for the rehabilitation of Tripoli Int'l Airport. The airfield was recaptured by GNU loyalists earlier this year.

An Italian Embassy in Tripoli communique states that two terminals will be built, the first of which will handle international flights and will be ready in ten months time. It will have a capacity of 4.5 million passengers per annum or 1,700 per hour.

A second terminal, for domestic flights, will be built in the following eight months featuring a throughput capacity of 2.5 million passengers per annum or 900 an hour.
